The need for love and support at time of a loss is one of the main spiritual needs of the elderly people. Where can the elderly, faced with physical or mental problems caused by the lack of natural social contacts, draw this love and support from? A majority of the elderly over seventy years of age were brought up in religious society of one of the Christian churches. These elderly reported some form of the Christian faith also in their old age, even though they spent a large part of their lives in a socialist society. This paper deals with the issue of religiosity as a source of love and support in difficult moments; and I refer to some results from the qualitative study “Spiritual needs in the South Bohemian elderly life”. The aim of this paper is to show the importance of spirituality/religiosity in coping with the problems associated with old age and to provide arguments for addressing this topic when training professionals and volunteers working with the elderly.
